Neuroaffirming diagnostic assessments for when traits of both autism and ADHD are present, designed to bring clarity, understanding, and a path forward.
At a glance

When autism and ADHD appear together

ADHD and autism often co-occur, creating a unique dynamic where traits from one can overlap, mask, or accentuate the other. A craving for routine sits alongside a need for novelty. Deep focus is followed by complete depletion. Assessing both together offers a comprehensive picture in a single, streamlined process, rather than two separate assessments that each explain only half of what is going on.

Where both neurotypes are present, each can obscure the other, which is why a single-condition assessment sometimes leaves questions unanswered. Northern Beaches families and adults often reach out for an AuDHD assessment when noticing:
  • A push and pull dynamic: craving routine and predictability, yet getting easily bored and seeking novelty or stimulation
  • Swinging between hyperfocus and burnout: diving deeply into intense interests, followed by extreme exhaustion or feeling emotionally drained
  • That sounds, textures, and other senses are experienced more intensely than others seem to
  • Struggling to manage daily demands: difficulty starting or completing tasks, while also feeling deeply overwhelmed by sensory environments or unwritten social rules
  • Masking, or a sense that there is more to the story: traits where one neurotype hides or counteracts the other, making it possible to just manage until expectations or stress increase
How an assessment can help

One process, the full picture

Every assessment is a collaborative process of understanding, not a checklist. Assessing both neurotypes together means the interaction between them is visible, rather than one presentation being read through the lens of the other.
The process

What to expect

An AuDHD assessment runs across four appointments, covering developmental history, direct observation, and cognitive and academic testing, through to a written report and feedback session.

FEES AND REBATES

$3,500, split across sessions

The fee reflects a combined assessment covering both neurotypes in one process. If you or your child are under 25, you may be eligible for a complex neurodevelopmental referral from a paediatrician or psychiatrist, which attracts a rebate of $406.20 across the assessment sessions. This is discussed during the intake call, and current fees are listed on the FAQs page.

Tools used for assessments

Gold-standard autism tools alongside standardised cognitive and attention testing, selected to suit each person’s age and presentation. Select a tool to read more.

ADOS-2

The Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule – 2nd Edition is a semi-structured, play- and conversation-based activity allowing social communication and interaction to be observed directly. The ADOS-2 is considered a ‘gold standard’ tool with different modules for different ages and language abilities.

MIGDAS-2

The Monteiro Interview Guidelines for Diagnosing the Autism Spectrum – 2nd Edition is a sensory-informed interview to understand a person’s unique way of interacting with and understanding the world. Designed to feel more like a genuine conversation, which often puts people more at ease than traditional testing formats.

WISC-V

The Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children, 5th Edition evaluates verbal comprehension, visual reasoning, processing speed, problem-solving, and working memory, providing an overall estimate of intellectual functioning.

WIAT-III

The Wechsler Individual Achievement Test, 3rd Edition assesses core academic skills in reading, writing, comprehension, and mathematics, showing your child’s learning style and how this relates to their unique thinking style.

Conners CPT

A computerised continuous performance test measuring sustained attention, focus, impulsivity, and vigilance. It provides objective attention data that complements what is reported at home, school, or work.

Questionnaires

Screening questionnaires exploring signs of both ADHD and autism are completed by parents, carers, and schools, gathering insight into how things look across different settings.

Clinical observation

Gentle engagement throughout tasks to observe focus, task approach, social communication style, and any signs of inattention or hyperactivity, all in a low-pressure environment.
What comes next

Following the assessment

A diagnosis opens the door to understanding and support. Following an assessment, post-diagnostic support is available through individual therapy: psychoeducation on both neurotypes, managing energy and burnout, and practical strategies for school, work, relationships, and everyday life. Parenting support is also available for families.

Common questions

AuDHD assessment FAQs

An assessment is never wasted. If diagnostic criteria aren’t met, the assessment will still provide a much greater understanding of your or your child’s unique strengths and challenges, plus guidance on how to offer support and which adjustments may be useful.

Tell them they’re meeting someone who will do some activities with them to learn how their brain works and learns best. Let them know there’s no pass or fail, everyone’s brain works differently.

The two frequently co-occur, and each can mask or accentuate the other. Assessing them separately risks explaining only half the picture, and means repeating developmental history and testing twice. A combined assessment covers both in one streamlined process.

The process runs across four appointments, which is more testing time than a single-condition assessment. From first contact to final report is usually five to six weeks, with the feedback session held three weeks after the final testing session.

It combines the diagnostic interview and observation used in an autism assessment with the cognitive, academic, and attention testing used in an ADHD assessment. The fee of $3,500 reflects the additional session time and report writing involved in covering both.

Yes. Reports are written to a standard suitable for NDIS access requests, school learning support applications, workplace adjustments, and other formal supports, with clear and practical recommendations.

Medicare rebates may be available in some circumstances. If you or your child are under 25, a complex neurodevelopmental referral from a paediatrician or psychiatrist attracts a rebate of $406.20 across the assessment sessions. This is discussed during the intake call.
