Signs an assessment may help

When to consider an assessment

Below are some of the patterns that most often bring Northern Beaches families and adults to an assessment. They may be more noticeable at points of change, such as starting school, moving into high school, beginning university or a new job, or after a long stretch of feeling worn down.
Recognising all of them is not necessary, and none of them confirms a diagnosis on its own. A few is reason enough to start a conversation. Some people come with a specific question in mind. Others have suspected for years that things should be easier than they feel.

Why people reach out

Common threads across every assessment

Every individual is unique, but most people arrive at an assessment with a few things in common.
Seeking a clear answer
Many people have sensed something for some time without a clear answer. An assessment provides language for your or your child’s experience, opening the door to understanding and support.
Wanting support, not a fix
Parents and adults alike are usually looking for understanding and practical strategies, not just a label.
Needing it in writing
A formal report and diagnosis, if applicable, are often needed to access school supports, workplace adjustments, or funding such as NDIS, which allows more timely support.

Assessment FAQs

Answers to the questions that come up most often about fees, rebates, timeframes, and what happens after an assessment. Each assessment page carries its own questions as well.

The right assessment depends on what you have been noticing. You can learn about the different types of assessments we offer here. The intake call covers your concerns and which pathway is suitable for you, so there is no need to decide before getting in touch.

Medicare rebates may be available in some circumstances. If you or your child are under 25, you may be eligible for a complex neurodevelopmental referral from a paediatrician or psychiatrist, which attracts a rebate of $406.20 across the assessment sessions. This is discussed during the intake call.

Most assessments take four to six weeks from first contact to final report, depending on the assessment type and the testing schedule.

Some components can, but most assessments involve at least one in-person session so that observation is accurate. This is discussed upfront for your specific situation.

You’ll receive a comprehensive written report and a feedback session to talk through the findings, any diagnosis, and practical next steps. Post-diagnostic support is available afterwards through individual therapy, and parenting support is available for families.
